L’hiver est là, direction la montagne…

David et Susan Scott, l’équipe mari et femme derrière Scott & Scott Architects de Vancouver ont attiré mon attention sur leur dernier projet:  construire une maison de montagne, toute en poutres du milieu du siècle bien entretenue  située juste sous la télécabine de Grouse Mountain à Vancouver. Scott & Scott a pris en charge le design ainsi que les travaux de renovation et de restauration eux-mêmes, et a conservé la disposition originale de 150 mètres carrés tout en présentant un aspect rafraîchi : espaces de vie ouverts, évier de cuisine et comptoir découpés dans une seule dalle de marbre, et bois pâle tout autour. La lumière en est la principale couleur. La douceur des matériaux invite à la détente. On visite ?

Ce sont eux qui ont reçu le prix Architizer A+ 2014 pour ce chalet durable  dans la catégorie Architecture + Self Initiated Projects.

Situé à l’extrémité nord de l’île de Vancouver, le chalet se trouve dans une région réputée pour sa poudreuse. Déterminé à avoir un impact minimum dans les bois, Scott & Scott a créé un bâtiment qui exigeait une excavation mécanique minimale : il résiste à de fortes chutes de neige en s’élevant au-dessus des colonnes d’arbres. Un spot idyllique pour snowboarder qui souhaite être aussi léger sur son snow que sur l’environnement.

La cabine d’un peu moins de 100 métres carrés est vraiment différente : elle est chauffée par un poêle à bois et éclairée par des bougies; L’eau est recueillie et apportée à partir d’une source locale.

David and Susan Scott, the husband-and-wife team behind Vancouver’s Scott & Scott Architects caught my eyes with their latest project : Commissioned to build a mountain house, the conservation-minded couple instead helped their clients locate a well-maintained midcentury post-and-beam house just below the gondola at Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver. Taking upon the design as well as the remodeling and restoration work themselves, Scott & Scott preserved the original 1,600-square-foot layout while introducing a refreshed look: open living spaces, a dramatic kitchen sink and counter carved from a single slab of marble, and pale wood all around. Light is its main color. The soft materials invites relaxation. Shall we go for a tour?

Located on the north end of Vancouver Island, the structure is located in an area renowned for its powder. Determined to tread lightly in the woods, Scott & Scott created a building that required minimal machine excavation: it withstands heavy snowfall by rising above it on tree-trunk columns. The couple say their design/build process was an adventure “not bound heavily in pre-determination.” The results? A stylish snowboarder’s idyll that is as light on its feet as it is on the environment.

The cabin is 1,000 square feet and off the grid: it’s heated by a wood-burning stove and lit by candles; water is collected and brought in from a local source.

The sustainable cabin just received an Architizer A+ 2014 award in the Architecture +Self Initiated Projects category.
